Know Your Caliber and Load, Not Just the Name
Ammunition is often listed by caliber, bullet weight, and bullet type all at once (e.g., “9mm 115gr FMJ”) — check all three before ordering, since two boxes of “9mm” can be built for very different purposes. See our guide on target vs. hunting ammo for more.
Buying in Bulk
Per-round cost usually drops at case quantities, which makes sense if you shoot regularly — just confirm it’s a load that already shoots reliably in your specific firearm before committing to a large quantity.
Shipping Realities
Ammunition ships via ground shipping only in almost all cases, so build in realistic transit time, especially around holidays or hunting season. Someone 18 or older is typically required to sign for or verify age at delivery, depending on the carrier and state.
State Rules Do Apply
A handful of states have their own rules affecting how an online ammunition order is fulfilled — see our state-by-state ammunition shipping guide. Checkout applies the correct rule automatically based on your shipping address.
Storage Once It Arrives
Store ammunition in a cool, dry place, ideally in its original packaging or a dedicated ammo can, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature swings. Properly stored ammunition has a very long shelf life; poor storage is what actually degrades it.
