Louisiana’s Season Structure at a Glance
Louisiana’s hunting calendar runs in a fairly consistent order every year: dove opens first in early September, archery deer season follows around the start of October, primitive-weapon and modern-firearm deer seasons roll through fall into winter depending on your area, and duck season runs in splits from mid-November into late January. Exact dates are set annually by LDWF, vary by area and zone, and can shift from year to year — this guide is a general planning timeline, not a substitute for checking your specific area’s dates at wlf.louisiana.gov before you hunt.
Dove Season: Early September
Louisiana’s dove season opens in splits across the North and South zones starting in early September, typically the first weekend of the month. Standard dove loads run light — 7.5 or 8 shot in 12 or 20 gauge is the common choice for the range most dove are taken at. If it’s been a year since your last dove hunt, this is also a good time to pattern your shotgun with the choke and load you plan to actually use.
Teal Season: Mid-to-Late September
A short special early teal season runs ahead of the general duck season, giving waterfowl hunters an early-season opportunity specifically for teal. Federal law requires non-toxic shot (steel, bismuth, or tungsten-based — not lead) for all migratory waterfowl hunting, teal included, so confirm your shells are compliant before the season opens if you haven’t bought ammunition since your last duck season.
Archery Deer Season: Early October
Archery deer season generally opens around the start of October across most of the state. This is the window to get your bow tuned, broadheads confirmed (see our fixed-blade vs. mechanical broadheads guide), and your sight pins re-checked after a summer of not shooting as much (our how to sight in a compound bow guide walks through the process) — not the week before opening day.
Primitive Weapon and Modern Firearm Deer Seasons: October Through January
Primitive-weapon and modern firearm (gun) deer seasons follow archery season, staggered by area, running from mid-fall into January depending on zone. Before gun season, re-confirm your rifle’s zero (our how to zero a rifle scope guide covers the process) rather than assuming last year’s zero still holds, especially if anything on the rifle has changed.
Duck Season: Mid-November Through January
General duck season runs in splits across Louisiana’s East and West zones, typically opening in mid-to-late November and running, with a break, into late January. Non-toxic shot is required by federal law for all waterfowl, and decoy spreads, calls, and waders are worth inspecting and repairing well before opening weekend rather than discovering a leak or a dead call battery in the blind.
The Practical Timeline
- Late August: pattern shotguns for dove, check duck gear from storage.
- Early September: dove season opens; teal season follows shortly after.
- Late September: bow tuning and sight-in for archery deer season.
- Early October: archery deer season opens in most areas.
- Mid-fall: rifle zero check ahead of primitive-weapon and gun deer seasons.
- Mid-November: duck season opens in splits by zone.
Always Confirm With LDWF
Season dates, zone boundaries, and bag limits are set and adjusted annually by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and can differ meaningfully between areas of the state.
