Suppressors 101: How They Work and What NFA Ownership Actually Involves

What a Suppressor Actually Does

A suppressor (or silencer — both are correct legal terms) reduces the sound of a gunshot by slowing and cooling the expanding gas released when the round fires. It does not make a gunshot silent — a suppressed shot typically still registers well above 130 decibels, comparable to a jackhammer, down from an unsuppressed shot’s 150-plus decibels.

Why People Actually Buy Them

Hearing protection is the primary reason for most owners — suppressors meaningfully reduce the risk of hearing damage for the shooter and anyone nearby, including hunting dogs. They also reduce recoil and muzzle rise somewhat, and reduce noise disturbance near a rural property or range.

The Legal Reality: NFA Ownership

Suppressors are regulated under the National Firearms Act, which means legal ownership requires a separate process from a standard firearm purchase: an ATF Form 4 application, a $200 federal transfer tax, a background check specific to that application, and a wait time that has historically ranged from a few weeks to several months. This is federal law, not a store policy.

State Law Varies

Suppressor ownership is legal in most states, but a handful restrict or ban civilian ownership outright. This is general public information, not legal advice — confirm your specific state’s law, and verify current requirements with your state or an attorney, before starting the purchase process.

What’s Involved After the Wait

Once ATF approval comes through, the transfer is completed through the dealer holding the item, with final paperwork and any state-specific requirements handled at that time.
